As a university hospital, we have deeply and widely pursued higher standards of medical services and have been dedicated to practicing these standards. It follows that our hospital currently achieves the top level of performance in multiple medical fields in Japan.
Minimally Invasive Therapy
Robot-assisted Surgery with da Vinci Surgical System/
Laparoscopic Surgery/ Thoracoscopic Surgery
Aiming for a medical service to allow patients to return to work early by making surgical incisions as small as possible, our hospital readily adopted the use of minimally invasive surgery. We incorporated endoscopic surgery from an early stage, building a significant record of experience in surgery for prostate cancer and other cancers, including gastric, colorectal, esophageal, lung, gynecologic, liver, and pancreatic tumors. In addition, we introduced two robot-assisted surgery units, the da Vinci Surgical System Xi to perform the most advanced surgeries with high accuracy.
Using cutting-edge technology, we invent new medical devices and promote the development of new drugs, supporting medical practice.
Our ophthalmology department has been engaged in the development and introduction of new treatments since Fujita Health University was established. For example, the late Prof. Yoshinao Majima introduced phacoemulsification (cataract surgery) in Japan, through which many patients underwent surgery. Recently, our hospital developed an operating microscope (Optical Fiber-free Intravitreal Surgery System, OFFISS), a main instrument used for eye surgery.
Using this microscope allows observation of all intraocular sites and thus safe and quick surgery. This surgical technique spread throughout the world and is now the standard for vitreoretinal surgery. In addition, Prof. Masayuki Horiguchi developed a surgical technique visualizing intraocular transparent tissues by staining (tissue-staining surgery), which is frequently used in eye surgery now. This tissue-staining surgery has made it feasible to safely perform difficult surgery on intraocular transparent tissues and is now a global standard. Since retrobulbar anesthesia required for eye surgery is accompanied by severe pain, our ophthalmology department developed a retrobulbar anesthesia technique through the capsule of Tenon—this technique causes very little pain. These unique treatments in our ophthalmology department are highly appreciated by patients with eye diseases, and the total number of vitreoretinal surgeries performed at our ophthalmology department is the highest in Japan.
Advanced Medical Services
Organ Transplant Surgery Pancreas/ Kidney
To manage kidney donors with cardiac arrest or multiple organ donation from brain-dead donors, our hospital performs deceased-donor kidney transplantation and living-donor kidney transplantation in patients with end-stage kidney failure and dialysis, and living related liver transplantation in patients with end-stage liver failure. We have continued to building experience in these areas. Our hospital is also the certified facility for pancreas transplantation from brain-dead donors to patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or end-stage kidney failure. In addition, we perform simultaneous pancreas–kidney transplantation, incorporating endoscopic surgery.
Cerebral and Spinal Cord Disease
Our neurosurgery department actively works on the following most advanced medical services. With rich experiences, we are capable of challenging skull base surgeries and bypass surgeries which are accompanied by a high level of invasion, as needed. In doing so, we are committed to provide safer and more reliable treatment. For brain tumors, we select the suitable treatment for the individual patient at the genetic level, applying advanced gene analysis technology as appropriate.
Heart blood vessel illness
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI)
Our hospital performs prosthetic valve placement as treatment in patients with severe aortic stenosis who have difficulty in undergoing conventional open-heart surgery due to old age or associated underlying diseases. Catheters are used in this treatment and less invasive for patients.
Our Endoscopy Center performs gastrointestinal diagnostic endoscopy and endoscopic treatment. We perform accurate diagnosis of tumors, inflammation, etc. For accurate diagnosis, we use magnifying observation with a specific light and dye, endoscopic ultrasonography, and confocal laser microendoscopy, using upper or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and double-balloon enteroscopy. For treatment, we perform endoscopic treatment or fecal implantation for gastrointestinal tumors, varices, and stenosis. In our Emergency Center, we perform emergency gastrointestinal endoscopy in patients with emergencies, such as hematemesis or melena/bloody stool.
Outpatient Chemotherapy Center
Our Outpatient Chemotherapy Center provides an environment that allows various professions to easily use their own expertise to safely administer drug therapy, such as chemotherapy or biological agents, on an outpatient basis. We continuously work to provide safe and high-quality team medical care that is patient focused. Moreover, we have a daily staff meeting among doctors, nurses, and pharmacists and work hard on reviewing and information sharing of the patients' treatment regimens.
In response to the increasing number of deaths from colorectal cancer, when classifying cancer deaths by site in Japan, our hospital adopted colon capsule endoscopy, which has been approved for insurance coverage since January 2014. Colon capsule endoscopy, a revolutionary form of endoscopy, allows colonic observation by simply swallowing a capsule. It is mentally and physically less invasive; for instance, there is no radiation exposure. Our hospital is committed to performing this test to enable an even safer and more reliable diagnosis based on the data of clinical studies conducted in Japan.
Minimally Invasive Therapy・Diagnostic Imaging Center
Based on the concept of “devoting an entire hospital building to the radiology department,” with the aim concentrating radiographic examinations to achieve efficient operations, the building was completed in 2012.
Within the building, five floors above ground and one basement floor, cutting-edge medical devices including CT and MRI for radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, angiography, etc., are installed. Highly needed PET-CT is available as well. Our CT device is the latest model that our hospital and a manufacturer jointly developed, wherein we successfully reduced the radiation exposure level to a quarter of that of the conventional CT.
Acute medical care
Our hospital provides rehabilitation from an early stage of onset in a wide range of areas such as cerebrovascular diseases, spinal cord injuries, bone and joint diseases, neurological diseases/myopathies, childhood diseases, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.
The physiotherapy room has in place a walking training robot, balance training robot, independent gait training robot for paralyzed patients, treadmill, and safety suspension for implementing advanced rehabilitation. The occupational therapy room is fully equipped with an arm training robot, and there is an ADL room with an adjustment function. We have six speech pathology rooms for responding to various medical conditions from aphasia to ingestion and swallowing disorders.
Rehabilitation treatment places focus on "daily life (activites)", and our goal is to help patients rebuild an even better quality of life. Our hospital's rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, prosthetics and orthotics specialists and nurses work together to provide comprehensive care for patients.
