The concept of rehabilitation is to make patients“re-habilis”, that is, to enable them to lead an ordinary life again. Therapists are centrally responsible for rehabilitation. The ideal characteristics of therapists are specialists who view the handicapped with sympathy, treat them with science-oriented, evidence-based medicine, and lead to effective rehabilitation.
Fujita Health University has innovated a new faculty to renew the concept of how to educate rehabilitation specialists: physical therapists and occupational therapists. For the new faculty, we have developed a novel education system called COSPIRE: the Clinical-Oriented System for Progression & Innovation of Rehabilitation Education.

・Classes are conducted by clinical specialists with distinguished achievement. ・Teaching staff regularly perform clinical activities at the university hospitals.
・With the highest emphasis on clinical exercises, students, in contact with patients, are trained directly by teachers at the university hospitals.
・Clinical studies are considered as the basic requirement and are carried out with organized collaboration with various rehabilitation facilities within the Fujita Health University.
・Post-graduate education learning is highly emphasized and provided to staff members and graduates.
Students learn the newest knowledge and techniques while treating patients in clinical teams directed by teachers. Knowledge built up in systemic courses, which is akin to “bones”, is strengthened through experience or “muscles”. Students will clearly realize what are important through experience. Students receive precise feedback on their degree of achievement through the OSCE (Objectively-Structured Clinical Examination).

Fujita Health University Hospital

Within the Fujita Health University, there are three unique hospitals having well-facilitated departments of rehabilitation which provide the highest standards of rehabilitation treatment: Fujita Health University Hospital which is among the best facilities in Japan, Banbuntane Hotokukai Hospital which is well integrated into the local community, and Nanakuri Sanatorium which is mainly specialized in rehabilitation. In one year we treat 3,124 new patients (accumulated number of patients is 183,107). Education of specialists requires in depth clinical experiences pre- and post-graduation.
