2020 Academic Year: the first Assembly Education workshop – Assembly II (July 12th)

*Workshops were conducted with necessary infection control measures in place.

Assembly II is a project activity for which the plan is laid and carried out by students on their own initiative. With teams comprising students from different departments, students acquire “group skills” through the various project activities on and off campus.

As a new Assembly I program has been introduced from this academic year, it was necessary to review the content of Assembly II to optimize the continuity from I to II. To identify the issues and challenges of Assembly II, we organized an Assembly Education workshop under the theme of “Program creation and solution to challenges of new Assembly II,” with Prof. Tomohiro Taguchi the invited lecturer. Following the opening addresses by President Saitoh and Prof. Ohtsuki, Director of the Center for The Assembly Education, 35 faculty and administrative staff members learned “team training coaching” skills, and discussion took place to identify challenges of Assembly II.
Date and Time: Sunday, July 12th, 2020, 9:35-16:20
Place: Room 602, 6th floor, the University Bldg. No. 2
Participants: Faculty and administrative staff of the Center for The Assembly Education, faculty members in charge of Assemblies I, II, III and IV
Theme: Program creation and solutions to challenges of the new Assembly II program
Lecturer: Prof. Tomohiro Taguchi (Instructor, School of Medicine, Fujita Health University)

Workshop participants

Lecture:

Part 1 was a lecture delivered by Prof. Kazuhiro Nishii, Deputy Director of the Center for The Assembly Education (in charge of Assembly II), entitled “Coming Assembly II and necessity of innovation.” Prof. Nishii shared the history of Assembly II since its formation until today, its achievements and challenges that have surfaced so far.
Part 2 was a lecture delivered by Prof. Tomohiro Taguchi, entitled “Introduction of new Assembly II.” Prof. Taguchi explained the outline of the new Assembly II activities, the theoretical background of how group skills will be built through the program and the role of faculty and support systems for the program.

Faculty Development Session:

It is critical to improve the facilitation skills of faculty members in order to enhance the Assembly II activities. Prof. Taguchi delivered a faculty development session, entitled “Team training and facilitation to advance team dynamics” for faculty members in charge of Assembly II. Through the experience of the session, faculty members learned rules of team coaching, basic knowledge and skills of team training, as well as facilitation skills and required mindset. Prof. Taguchi shared various studies, useful for improving skills as well as gaining better understanding of team coaching.
Through this faculty development session, the upskilling of the faculty members in charge was found to be an issue of Assembly II, as it was for Assembly I. At the same time, it became apparent that, through the activities, faculty members can be developed together with students.

Group work:

Based on the knowledge acquired at the faculty development session, active discussions were held in groups to identify issues and challenges of Assembly II. Participants realized how the clear allocation of roles, like facilitator or timekeeper, is important to keep group work running smoothly, and major issues and challenges were identified.
These issues and challenges were reviewed and solutions were discussed at the second Assembly Education workshop, held on August 6th 2020.
