Guideline for Guest Doctors in Department of Neurosurgery, Fujita Health University

Location

Fujita Health University (FHU) is located in Toyoake City. It is 30 km from Nagoya Airport and 30 km also from the center of Nagoya City.

Housing

For Guest Doctors who stay for long period, minimum one year, Department can help to rent a room in dormitory of the hospital where located just next to the hospital, only five minutes waking to office.

For Guest Doctors who stay for only short period, Department has rent one apartment with two rooms near to the hospital (20 minutes walking, 10 minutes by bicycle), this apartment is for two guest doctors.

All of these rooms are full furnished, in apartment it is in Japanese style. The most important thing is to clean all of the equipment before one is going to leave because it will be very important for the next guest doctor. Some personal equipment must prepared by guest doctors (like toiletries, shaving, etc.)

Daily Activities

Daily activities of guest doctors basically are to join the daily activities of the Department. The guest doctors must joint early morning meeting at ICU lounge at about 07.30 a.m. that continued by ICU ward round at about 08.15, and after that day planning at 09.00 a.m.

After those morning activities, foreign doctors can join activities in operating theatre, either by assisting or observing the operation. These activities are started at 09.00 o'clock.

There are Professor ward round every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (by Asc. Professor), guest doctors must joint these round.

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon these are meetings that discuss academic paper and operations planning.

All guest doctors have to present their experience or research work or neurosurgical services in their place, it would be better if it has been prepared before coming to Japan.

The daily timetable is enclosed.

Saturday afternoon and Sunday are free time for shopping daily needs or sightseeing in Nagoya City, There are a lot of interesting tourism and shopping areas in Nagoya City. But in case there is an emergency surgery, guest doctors must also attend the surgery that will be inform by pocket bell.

Shopping for daily life

There is one supermarket located near the main gate of the hospital, most of daily needs are available here, but with a little bit expensive rates.

There are two supermarkets located in apartment complex near hospital (Toyoake Danchi). It is about 1.5 km, or about 10 minutes by bicycle and about 15 minutes by walk. Some daily needs are cheaper in these stores.

Another supermarket complex is in Tokushige, there are Apita Supermarket and 100 yen shop. In 100 yen shop all the goods in that shop are costing 100 yen each. By bicycle it will take about 25 minutes to reach there.

Another big supermarket is Hallo Land, it takes 25 minutes by bicycle to go there.

Neurosurgery Department has three bicycles.

Electronic goods and house appliance are available in Apita and Hallo Land.

About 30,000 - 50,000 yen are required for living expenses (food) every month.

Financial Aid for guest doctors - Following regulations are valid until the end of 2000.

Guest doctors that come to department with his own expenses will get support from the department. Resident class doctors will get support 50,000 yen every month. Senior class doctors (ex. Asc. Prof.) will get 100,000 yen every month.

For guest doctors who come to department by International Exchange Program of FHU (one year stay), department will give support 150,000 yen every month.

Department will not provide any financial support for guest doctors who come to Japan with scholarship of the Japanese Department of Education or funded by Pharmacological Company such as TAKEDA foundation.

Transportation to Nagoya

The best way to go to Nagoya is by City Bus and Subway Train, because we have to change the bus/train for at least two times, the most economic way is using a "One Day Pass" ticket, it cost only ¥850 but we can use for the whole day. Another economic way is using pre-paid card for City bus and Subway.

The nearest bus station is Moronoki (5 min by bicycle, 10 min waking or in working day there is a free shuttle bus from hospital to that station every 15 minutes).

There are two lines city bus that connected Moronoki to Subway network in Nagoya City. First is bus number 13 connected to Hara Subway Station and the second is bus number 14 connected to Nonami Station. These two stations have connection with all subway station in Nagoya City.

Telephonic and Internet

There is one international public telephone in the main lobby of the hospital (gray color). One hundred-yen coins are needed to make an international call.

Another choice is using a pre-paid card issued by KDD, with this card international call can be made even from local public telephone (green color). This pre-paid card is available in Apita Supermarket.

Internet network is available free of charge in the library of FHU. This library is located in the second floor of the first building of FHU. New e-mail address can be made by these computers.

Language

Knowledge of Japanese language will be very useful.

TIPS

  1. Japanese people are famous about their hospitality, so no need to worry about anything.
  2. It will be advisable to bring long lasting raw food material till one get used to Japanese food instead of bringing many clothes and books.
