Research Topic in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience Led by Assistant Professor Sopak Supakul as Topic Editor Is Now Open
Assistant Professor Sopak Supakul is serving as a Topic Editor for a new Research Topic in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, entitled “Biological sex and sex hormones in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias: From cells to patients.”
This Research Topic focuses on the roles of biological sex and sex hormones in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including their influence on disease risk, age at onset, progression, neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and treatment response. It aims to bring together research spanning experimental models, translational studies, clinical research, and population-based studies.
The Research Topic particularly welcomes studies using human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural models, including neurons, astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, co-cultures, organoids, and assembloids, to investigate sex- and hormone-dependent mechanisms. Research addressing sex differences in amyloid-β and tau pathology, synaptic function, neuroinflammation, genetics, APOE genotype, biomarkers, and therapeutic responses is also within its scope.
Through this Research Topic, the Topic Editors aim to advance our understanding of sex-related mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and to bridge findings from cellular and experimental models to clinical and patient-oriented research.
