Introduction

The Department of Clinical Physiology conducts education, research, and clinical testing related to clinical physiological function testing that directly examines the patient's body using a variety of measuring instruments. We provide advanced techniques and information in all aspects of physiological function testing performed in medical institutions, including cardiovascular testing, imaging testing, neuromuscular testing, respiratory testing, and sensory function testing. Our research involves epidemiological studies on a large number of cases in university hospitals and the general Japanese population. From the standpoint of each specialty, we aim to develop novel biomarkers and establish new diagnostic methods for the early detection and treatment of diseases and for the elucidation of pathological conditions.

Research Theme

1.Research on the usefulness of ultrasonography in the gastrointestinal region.
2.Research on the evaluation method of atherosclerosis using novel biomarkers.

Currently, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is found in about 30% of adults. In "Research on the usefulness of ultrasonography in the gastrointestinal region," we are studying the establishment of a scoring system that can evaluate and differentiate NASH/NAFLD non-invasively by combining liver stiffness and blood test data.
As for "Research on evaluation method of atherosclerosis using novel biomarkers," we are conducting research on the development of atherosclerosis biomarkers for preemptive medicine that contributes to early diagnosis and evaluation of atherosclerosis. For this purpose, we participate in a community health checkup program and perform carotid artery ultrasound examinations. Our goal is to develop a biomarker for atherosclerosis by measuring stiffness parameter beta and intima-media thickness (IMT), which are indicators of atherosclerosis, from ultrasound images and combining them with other medical checkup data. 3.Study on the introduction of artificial intelligence technology to the abdominal ultrasonography.

Measurement equipment used in the study.

The greatest advantage of ultrasonography is that it is non-invasive and can be performed repeatedly. The progress of ultrasonography has been remarkable, and it is now possible to diagnose fibrosis and steatosis based on ultrasound attenuation coefficients, in addition to the usual imaging diagnosis of morphological changes. Therefore, we are investigating the usefulness of ultrasonography for fat-related diseases (fatty liver, visceral fat, etc.) in the digestive tract in collaboration with our university hospitals. In particular, we are investigating the usefulness of liver fibrosis evaluation for the diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We have also started to investigate the detection and differential diagnosis of liver tumors using AI. (Keisuke OSAKABE)

The central nervous system is composed of not only neurons but also glial cells. Recently, it has been reported that not only abnormalities in neurons but also glial function are implicated in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. We examine how abnormalities in glial cells influence on neuronal functions and development of neuropsychiatric disorders, using glial cell-specific genetic manipulation.
In recent years, it has been reported that abnormalities in the peripheral nervous system, such as the intestinal microbiota and peripheral immunity, also play a role in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. By analyzing the composition of microbiota and peripheral immune cells, we study how abnormalities in the peripheral-central nervous system affect brain function. (Kazuo Kunisawa)

Medical cooperation with the Department of Clinical Laboratory, Fujita Health University Hospital

We are seconded to the Physiology Laboratory of the Department of Clinical Laboratory, Fujita Health University Hospital to perform physiological testing. In addition to reducing the workload in the clinical field, we are actively sharing the latest knowledge and techniques and educating new technologists.

Dispatch of graduate students to the Clinical Laboratory, Fujita Health University Hospital

We have been dispatching graduate students to the Clinical Laboratory of Fujita Health University Hospital to support their work. Currently, graduate students are dispatched to the Diagnostic Center for Sonography and Physiology Laboratory to perform physiological testing. These efforts not only help graduate students improve their physiological testing skills, but also help them grow in terms of patient care and attitude as a medical professional. In addition, they reduce the workload in the clinical field, which is beneficial for both parties.

Collaborative Research

We are conducting joint research with various departments at Fujita Health University Hospital. At Fujita Health University Hospital, a large number of patients are examined, and the examination data of many cases are stored. We are working on the development of new biomarkers and diagnostic markers by conducting collaborative research using these test data.
