Introduction

In the Department of Preventive Medical Sciences, we conduct molecular epidemiological studies on the development of non-communicable diseases. For example, we are constructing risk model for disease onset using genetic information and analyzing biomarkers that mediate between exposure (life-style) and outcome (disease). Our goal is to contribute to preventive medicine by predicting the disease onset or elucidating the molecular mechanism.
If you are interested in Epidemiology, biomarker analysis, prevention of disease onset, and/or statistical analysis, welcome to visit our laboratory and join us.

Research Theme

Molecular Epidemiological study on life-style and life-style related diseases in general population

We participate in health check-ups in Yakumo town, Hokkaido, which has been held since 1982 (Yakumo Study). About 500 residents participate this health check-ups in every year. We conduct molecular epidemiological study on life-styles and onset of life-style related diseases.

Recently, it has been suggested that epigenetics, a mechanism that regulates gene expression regardless of the gene sequence, plays an important role in the development of life-style related diseases. We analyze DNA methylation and miRNA, which is one of the Epigenetics, to elucidate mechanism of development of diseases and establish biomarkers useful for risk assessment.

A large-scale genetic epidemiological study for chronic disease in a Japan population

To realize preventive medicine, it is important to estimate disease risks incorporating genetic factors and lifestyle habits in a Japanese population. Our on-going project constructs a risk estimation model that combines genetic factors and lifestyle habits, focusing on hypertension and renal function. The genetic data about 15,000 Japanese is obtained from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (J-MICC) Study, which is one of the largest genome cohort studies in Japan.

Annual Events

Health check-ups in the Yakumo, Hokkaido, Japan

Scene of the Health check-up

In every August, we participate in the annual health check-ups in the town of Yakumo, Hokkaido, Japan, where we conduct questionnaires and collect blood and urine samples. This event is essential to conducting Epidemiological study.

Conference Presentation

Scene of receiving poster presentation award in the Japanese Society of Public Health

Faculty members and graduate students present their research at academic conferences in Japan and abroad such as Scientific meetings of the Japan Epidemiology Association and the World Congress of Epidemiology.

Journal Club

Once a week, we have a scientific meeting to critically evaluate recent articles with research colleagues.

Lab trip

Every year, we go out to take pictures of the starry sky, autumn leaves etc. In summer, we go on a camping trip with research colleagues to deepen a friendship.
