We receive many inquiries from patients and their families asking whether BNCT might be an option for their own cancer or that of a loved one. While we share the hope of making this innovative therapy available to more patients as soon as possible, we also have a responsibility to provide accurate information and to place patient safety above all else.
We would therefore like to ask for your understanding of the following three important points.

1. BNCT is currently approved only for specific head and neck cancers in Japan.
At present, Japan's national health insurance covers BNCT only for unresectable locally advanced or locally recurrent head and neck cancers (tumors located below the brain and above the clavicles) that meet specific eligibility criteria.
BNCT is not currently available for abdominal cancers such as pancreatic cancer, biliary tract cancer, or liver cancer. Although research is actively underway, the technology required to safely deliver therapeutic neutron doses to deep-seated abdominal tumors has not yet reached the stage of clinical implementation. At this time, no medical center anywhere in the world offers BNCT for these cancers as a standard clinical treatment.
We understand the desire to search for every possible treatment option. However, we hope this information will help spare patients and their families the physical and emotional burden of searching for a treatment that is not yet available.

2. Current status of BNCT at Fujita Health University
Fujita Health University is currently constructing a state-of-the-art BNCT treatment facility and preparing to expand the clinical application of BNCT to cancers that have historically been difficult to treat, including abdominal malignancies.
Our team is working toward the launch of clinical studies and clinical trials planned for 2028. However, BNCT treatment is not currently available at our institution, including as standard medical care, self-funded treatment, or participation in clinical trials.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop the scientific and clinical foundation necessary to make these future studies possible.

If you have head and neck cancer and may meet the current eligibility criteria for BNCT in Japan, please consult your physician regarding referral to a medical institution that is currently authorized to provide BNCT.
